Every winter, the same debate pops up in local Facebook groups: “What’s the best hill for sledding in Guelph?” My 11-year-old son and I decided to finally settle it. We hit the five most talked-about hills in one Family Day and came back with an honest verdict on every single one.
🏆 1. Westwood Hill
9.5 / 10
📍 Behind Westwood School
We kicked off at Westwood Hill, and it set the bar high right from the start. Big, wide, and perfect for families — plenty of room to spread out even when it’s busy. My son loved how easy the climb back was, which meant lots of runs. Parking was surprisingly painless too.
Pros
✓ Great for all ages
✓ Lots of space — no overcrowding
✓ Gentle slope for young sledders
Cons
✕ No designated walk-up lane — watch for sledders coming down
🏅 Winner: Best Family-Friendly Hill
🎢 2. Country Club Hill
7 / 10
📍 Waverley Drive & Riverview Drive
Trickier to find than expected — but once we located it, we could see the appeal. The top half slows right down mid-slope, while the bottom half feels like a mini roller coaster. After a couple of test runs we stuck to the lower section, and that’s where the real fun began.
Pros
✓ Natural bumps make it exciting
✓ Long run, great for all ages
Cons
✕ Hard to find if you don’t know the area
✕ Flat middle section kills momentum
💡 Tip: Start halfway down for full speed
🦴 3. Mole Hill (a.k.a. Moe Hill)
9.5 / 10
📍 Municipal St. at Centennial Park
The great debate: Mole Hill or Moe Hill? We’re calling it Mole Hill — it literally looks like a giant mole in the middle of a field. This one is not for beginners. Steep, fast, and absolutely thrilling. My son couldn’t stop grinning. I couldn’t stop catching my breath. Good parking, unbeatable adrenaline rush — just budget extra time for the climb back up.
Pros
✓ Fast, thrilling runs
✓ Great for older kids & teens
✓ Good parking nearby
Cons
✕ Tough climb back up
✕ Narrow start gets crowded
✕ Not ideal for small children
🚀 Winner: Best Hill for Older Kids & Thrill-Seekers
🌨️ 4. Mary Phalen Hill
8 / 10
📍 Bishop Court at Mary Phalen School
By the time we arrived here, we were getting tired — but this hill brought us right back to life. Easy to find, good parking, wide and friendly slope. Younger kids can start halfway up comfortably. The surprise bump at the bottom is the highlight — my son hit it perfectly and caught air. I caught a mild heart attack.
Pros
✓ Easy to find, good parking
✓ Wide — comfortable for all ages
✓ Fun surprise bump at the bottom
Cons
✕ School sits at the base — stay alert near the bottom
👍 Verdict: Fun, safe, and great for family outings
🏔️ 5. Kortright Hill
10 / 10
📍 Hanlon Creek Park, Kortright Rd. W.
We saved the best for last. Kortright Hill is the one we’ve been visiting since my son was a baby — a true Guelph classic. Located in Hanlon Creek Park, it offers two distinct slopes: one gentle, one steep. That balance makes it perfect for little kids and thrill-seekers alike. The vibe is always friendly and community-driven, and runs are smooth, long, and satisfying.
Pros
✓ Two slopes — gentle and steep
✓ Easy to climb back up
✓ Great community atmosphere
✓ Beautiful at sunset
Cons
✕ Parking gets tricky after heavy snowfall — arrive early
